Bitcoin climbed to its highest level in a week, hitting around $83,500 on Wednesday morning as a broad rebound in Asian technology stocks lifted demand for risk assets across markets. The move underscored crypto’s continued sensitivity to equity market sentiment, particularly among institutional and retail traders tracking both sectors simultaneously.
According to reporting by CoinDesk, the rally gained traction after strong earnings reports from tech companies in the U.S. and Asia. South Korea’s Kospi index surged 3.29%, while Nasdaq 100 futures rose 0.44%, setting a bullish tone that flowed through to digital assets. Bitcoin’s 0.6% gain since midnight UTC reflected this broader appetite for growth-oriented holdings, even as macro uncertainties persist.
SpaceX-Tesla merger talks spark $2.5B bitcoin angle
The most attention-grabbing development came from billionaire Elon Musk’s announcement that SpaceX and Tesla have formed special committees to explore a potential merger. The deal carries a significant crypto dimension: the two companies hold more than 30,000 bitcoin combined, worth approximately $2.5 billion at current prices.
While merger negotiations typically focus on operational synergies and valuation, the bitcoin holdings highlight how deeply entrenched cryptocurrency has become in corporate treasuries. A successful combination would create one of the largest institutional holders of digital assets under unified management, potentially influencing how Musk approaches both companies’ crypto strategies going forward.
The merger talk provided psychological support for risk sentiment more broadly, though it remains unclear whether a deal would accelerate or constrain bitcoin buying by either entity.
Altcoins follow bitcoin higher, but divergence emerges
Ethereum gained 0.6% to near $2,460, mirroring bitcoin’s modest upside. The CoinDesk 100 Index rose 0.84%, though Near Protocol led with a 6.0% surge to about $5.23, driven by growth in its cross-chain swap product and a governance proposal to reduce annual token issuance from 2.5% to 1.6% over two years.
Zcash extended a more dramatic rally, jumping roughly 11% over 24 hours after developers announced a November activation date for the NU7 upgrade. The enhancement will cut block confirmation times from 75 to 25 seconds, making privacy transactions settle three times faster, while directing 60% of transaction fees into a long-term reserve. Despite the bounce, ZEC remains down around 12% over the month.
Not all altcoins participated equally. Aerodrome, the Base exchange token, fell 4.4%, while Morpho slipped 2.7% as decentralized finance underperformed, with the broader DeFi sector index rising just 0.22%.
Derivatives signal caution beneath the surface
Beneath the headline gains, derivatives positioning suggested traders remained cautious. Twenty-four-hour crypto futures volume jumped to $190 billion, up 19%, while liquidations spiked 76% to $284 million, indicating forced position closures.
Open interest across bitcoin and ethereum lagged their respective spot price gains over 24 hours — bitcoin’s price rose 2.6% while OI climbed 3%, and ether’s price surged 3.35% against just a 2% OI increase. This divergence pointed to traders closing positions rather than establishing fresh bullish bets. In other words, the rally was being driven primarily by existing holders taking profits and short-covering rather than new capital entering the market.
Bitcoin’s 30-day implied volatility index fell below 40%, signaling investor expectations of steadier market conditions ahead. The taker long-short ratio tilted 53% to 47% toward bullish positioning, yet ethereum options remained skewed toward protective puts, with a one-month put-call skew of 8%.
Privacy-focused tokens drew attention for different reasons. Zcash’s open interest jumped 24% against a 12% price gain, suggesting new leverage was being added despite negative cumulative volume delta readings — a sign that sellers were hitting bids into the strength. Monero’s funding rate sat positive at 4%, making it an outlier in the current environment.
The broader picture: bitcoin’s weekly high reflects genuine appetite for risk, but the divergence between price strength and derivative positioning hints that much of this move may be technical in nature rather than backed by sustained institutional demand.
